The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (PBGV) is a scent hound developed to hunt small game over the rough and difficult terrain of the Vendeen region of France.  They are bold and vivacious in character while compact, tough and robust in construction.  They have an alert look, lively bearing and a good voice freely used. This is a sturdy dog, rough and ready with a tousled appearance.  The most distinguishing characteristics of this breed are their unrefined outline, proudly carried head with definitive long eyebrows, beard and moustache and a strong tapered tail carried like a saber.  The tousled appearance created by a rough coat is an essential feature of correct breed type, which has no feature exaggerated and all parts in balance.  A PBGV is friendly, outgoing and alert but not for everyone.  Their abundance of energy requires plenty of room to wander, explore and exercise.  There is also a need for security, as the PBGV can be a digger and jumper and they are extremely agile and quick.  The PBGV is a bit terrier-like, always looking for something to keep them busy.  They notice every little movement and slight change.  They are extremely intelligent and, above all, curious. The PBGV learns quickly and is willing to please; however, their appearance and demeanor are of happy confidence, innocent devilment and benign revelry. There is no denying that this breed is happy one, with a wonderful personality, making for a great family and companion dog.
